What Are Alien Words?

Alien words—also known as nonsense words or pseudo words—are made-up words that follow regular phonics rules but have no meaning. They are constructed using sounds (phonemes) that children have already been taught and are a key part of phonics education, especially in early reading development.

Examples of Alien Words

  • brip
  • snorb
  • mep
  • zort
  • grute

These are all phonically decodable, meaning children can sound them out using their phonics knowledge, even though they are not real English words.

Why Are Alien Words Used?

Alien words are especially useful in phonics assessments, such as the Year 1 Phonics Screening Check in the UK. This is a national test taken in June by all Year 1 children to assess how well they can blend sounds to read words.

Alien words are used in the check to:

  • Test decoding skills, not memorization.
  • Ensure children are applying phonics rules, rather than relying on visual memory of familiar words.
  • Give a fair measure of reading ability without vocabulary interference.

Since alien words are unfamiliar by design, they help teachers see if children can truly read using phonics, rather than just recognizing words they’ve seen before.

Why Should Children Practise Alien Words?

  • Boosts decoding skills – Reinforces phonics knowledge without relying on memory.
  • Makes learning fun – Kids often find nonsense words funny and enjoyable.
  • Helps with assessment – Builds confidence for the Phonics Screening Check.
  • Promotes word recognition – Encourages children to look closely at all letters in a word and apply sound-blending skills.
